Request Free American Chestnut Seeds by Mail

Offer type: Free seeds by mail · Checked: October 17, 2026

Want to grow an American chestnut? American Chestnut Restoration, Inc. says it provides seed nuts to people who request them at no charge. You do not have to be a member, although members receive priority. The organization says it will fill as many nonmember requests as it can and may run out, so a request is not a guarantee.

What to know before requesting

• What you get: pure American chestnut seeds, not hybrids or GMO. They are not resistant to chestnut blight, so this is a chance to grow the species, not a disease-resistant tree.
• Cost: the organization describes the seeds as free of charge and does not require membership. Its page does not clearly say whether postage could be charged, so confirm shipping costs if that matters before submitting.
• Timing: this is not an instant shipment. American Chestnut Restoration says it will email in the fall or spring before mailing to confirm you are ready to receive the seeds.
• Eligibility and information: membership is not required. The page does not spell out geographic limits; the request form asks for a name and mailing address, with email and phone fields, so check with the organization if you are outside the United States.

This may suit gardeners, educators, and people interested in tree restoration who are comfortable with a seasonal wait and the possibility that supplies run out. Read the organization’s notes carefully: the seeds will not be blight resistant, and growing chestnuts takes patience.

Read the official offer details and, if it still fits your plans, submit the seed-interest form. The official page says the request is free, but verify any shipping question directly with the organization.
